Suvla's journey began in 2003 with Pınar and Selim Zafer Ellialtı and their vision of family winemaking. Inspired by the rich culture and history of the Dardanelles, they established their first vineyards in Eceabat – on the historical soil of Troy.
The journey of Suvla began with the initiative of husband and wife Pınar and Selim Zafer Ellialtı in family viticulture and wine production. It draws its inspiration from the geography to which it belongs, from its historical structure and its cultural richness. The vineyard and winery are located in Eceabat, on those special soils on the opposite bank of Çanakkale, considered in mythological sources as the historical home of Troy and one of the most famous ancient sites in the world. Suvla takes its name from an unspoiled and iconic bay on the North Aegean coast of the historic Gelibolu (Gallipoli) Peninsula.
The couple planted the first vines in 2003 and opted for quality-oriented viticulture methods to ensure that the grown grapes are processed into wine under the best possible conditions. In the vineyard, established in the Kabatepe-Kumlimanı region within the boundaries of the National Park on the historic peninsula, the focus was on sustainable agricultural practices from the very first years. The planting, which began on an area of 50 hectares, reached 100 hectares with 15 different grape varieties and obtained the right to the "EU-approved Organic Certificate" (*) in 2023. The family vineyard was named "Bozokbağ" after the couple's newborn son in its founding years. The terroir of the peninsula between the North Aegean and the Sea of Marmara, where viticulture has been practiced for many years, is characterized by its proximity to the sea, iodine and resin-rich air, prevailing Karayel winds (northwesterly winds), and clay soil structure. In this region, known for its historical significance, the relationship between vine and soil has continued for centuries.
Suvla strives to produce wines with rich character that are consistent and always preferred, by prioritizing local terroir and indigenous grape varieties. Suvla wines are processed from grapes harvested from the family vineyard, from neighboring vineyards in the North Aegean and Thrace, and from selected regions of Turkey, including Tokat, Elazığ, Diyarbakır, and Cappadocia. These special series produced by Suvla represent the uniqueness of their geographical origin.
In these rapidly passing years, wine lovers have undoubtedly been one of the most important guideposts for the brand. Suvla always maintains close contact with wine enthusiasts and makes sure to consider their preferences and expectations among its own priorities. Among the outstanding projects implemented under the leadership of an environmentally friendly approach and ecological sustainability are renewable solar energy, wastewater management, and organic viticulture. The winery, whose entire roof is covered with solar panels, began to meet all its energy needs from the sun and now covers about 71% of its total electricity consumption. In this way, 2,174 trees are saved annually and 333,490 tons of CO2 emissions are prevented.
The Suvla winery, which places great importance on the use of current technology, houses three interconnected production facilities dedicated to micro-vinification, experimental vinification, and large-scale production. The cellar, with a processing capacity of about 5 million liters, features a modern infrastructure that includes a gravity flow system, special cold rooms, an oak barrel cellar, a laboratory, as well as conical and rotating tanks, and applies natural methods. Suvla's portfolio, in addition to over 70 labels ranging from accessible series to limited, organic, and special productions, also reflects the care given to micro-varieties and indigenous varieties, especially Karasakız (Mavrupalia).
The Suvla winemaking team, under the guidance of French oenologists from Bordeaux and the Val de Loire, who have regularly visited the winery since its early days, and with an average of 30 years of experience and expertise, produces white, rosé, and red wines in various series, based on different production techniques and diversity. Great importance is placed on offering a wealth of experiences by processing many small specialized vineyards and local grape varieties separately, especially the indigenous grapes of their own North Aegean region and Eceabat, Kınalı Yapıncak and Karasakız.
The Suvla winery also houses the brand "Kilye Doğal Ürünler" (Kilye Natural Products), which originated in the early years when the couple began viticulture, out of a passion for natural, healthy, and additive-free production. The natural product production center, which primarily processes olives, olive oil, and the Çanakkale tomato, harvested only in summer, as well as regional produce, has existed for about 18 years with a production model that emphasizes the work of women, and offers special and exquisite products.
At the point reached through the almost 20-year privilege of appealing to various palates and the experience of building a bond with wine lovers, it is clear that, in addition to their own production, there is a growing joy in offering new products to the consumer. In order to provide wine lovers with a richer variety and experience based on the lessons learned along the way, a broad collection of wines and distilled products selected from leading terroirs and various regions of the world is being compiled. With "Suvla Import" founded in 2023 and its experienced team, it is possible to get to know each of the brands whose import and distribution throughout Turkey has been undertaken, to visit the vineyards, wineries, and distilleries, and to experience their products. The portfolio, which reflects the value of the relationships Suvla has developed with selected producers in the import process – similar to wine –, is strong from the outset. Each of these special brands, chosen according to their own taste, has a clear connection to the terroir of their origin and to the producer, which aligns with Suvla's expertise and vision.
In addition, Suvla operates two restaurants that welcome approximately 85,000 visitors annually and manages 8 retail locations spread across Turkey, interacting with over 72,855 consumers per year. With the restaurant typical of the winery in Eceabat, which began operations at its inception, and the Suvla Bistro Wine Bar (Kanyon) active in Istanbul since 2016, they offer wine lovers dining and wine experiences with contemporary menus.
The products are listed in A+ restaurants, hotels, all chain stores, and reputable wine boutiques throughout Turkey.
The character of the region to which it belongs, its nature, and the originality of its soil are reflected not only in the wines but in Suvla's entire identity, right down to all presentations. Suvla strives to maintain the identity of an economic and cultural bridge between past and future in the region where it is located.
Suvla wishes, on this long journey it is taking in pursuit of its dreams, to be a preferred brand in the world of gastronomy with the strength of its team of over 300 people, and to accompany the different moments of wine lovers by continuing production in the desired style and variety.
Since the launch of Suvla wines, the brand has received almost 750 awards in national and international competitions, most of them gold and first places. Among the most recently won gold and silver awards are the title of "Best Balkan Winery", awarded for 6 consecutive years at "The Balkans International Wine Competition" (2020–2025), as well as "Best of Show", "Best Sparkling Wine Trophy", and "Double Gold" with 94 points. Also noteworthy is the "Grand Gold" award, won at Vinaria 2023, one of the most important competitions in the Balkans.
